Press release
Long Story Short LA is pleased to present Silent Town. Based in Japan, this will be Yuka Yoneyama’s first international exhibition, on view December 9 – January 20, 2024.
Silent Town is based on coincidence and action, the universal phenomena occurring constantly around us. With keen observation, Yoneyama creates striking oil paintings capturing the two phenomena, as well as the fleeting moments, chance occurrences, and unexpected visuals which arise from them.
Sharing her process behind Silent Town, Yoneyama states, “For example, I capture the whiteness of odd shapes that are created by chance when light hits simple shapes, or the way silhouettes change when objects overlap with each other. Natural objects such as people and plants have complex shapes, and their silhouettes can be identified as them at any moment. In contrast, objects with simple shapes can change into different forms that hide their true identity in an instant with a little action.”
Yoneyama's deliberate removal of unnecessary figurative elements, a distinguishing feature of her art, allows her to introduce abstraction into her compositions, crafting visuals that transcend the limitations of photography. The resulting paintings are not only visually striking, but also offer a unique perspective on the intricacies of form, action, and identity. Silent Town invites viewers to explore this perspective, revealing the extraordinary found in the ordinary.
