Press release

We are pleased to present Obsessions, a solo exhibition of paintings by Anne Nero. The show will run from March 26 to April 24, 2022.

For artist Anne Nero, the tension between spontaneity and control blossoms into paintings which take on their own idiom. In a challenge to her own obsessive qualities, primarily the mastery of paint, Nero welcomes in the outside world—the influence of playful, banal and intrusive elements into works that otherwise are feats of exactitude.

In Suspicious Cloud (2022), the contrast between delicately rendered shapes and a visceral imposto cloud produce a dream-like quality, while a compositional reflection—a purple wash against a dark background, refines this effect to the point of intensity. In Sharp Tongue, the shape of sound becomes palpable by overlapping organic and geometric forms, balancing subtle fades with rough surfaces. In Juggling Circles of Friends (2022) conical spikes protrude from amoeba-like forms which rest on a ribbon of paint, which unlike the rest of the work lays bare its brushwork, a juxtaposition which invites personification. Throughout Obsessions, forms and spaces feel at once familiar and alien, a testament to Nero’s ability to communicate specific emotional content through these vibrant, non-represental works.

Nero was born in Moscow in 1988. She holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts and in addition to her artistic practice is a Guest Professor at the Art Academy of Mainz. Nero’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Rainbow Unicorn Studios in Berlin, and SchierkeSeinecke, in Frankfurt, among others. This is her first solo exhibition at Another Place.
