Press release
Focal Point 3 explores how personal and collective identities are shaped by cultural contexts, environments, and historical changes. Each artist brings unique approaches to create reflective and thought-provoking narratives about identity, heritage, and the human experience. Each artist delves into how their surroundings, cultural backgrounds, and histories influence their sense of self and relationships with others.
Shangkai Kevin Yu's artistry examines relationships with thoughts, environments, and each other from an outsider's perspective. Using everyday objects, he crafts contemplative and meticulous narratives, such as kettles partying, intimate encounters in kitchen drawers, lovers vacationing by the sink, and reflections on life and death at a fireplace. Jiajia Wang paintings examine the impact of television, the internet, and pop culture on his generation through digital collage, action painting, and silkscreen printing, creating narratives around contemporary digital landscapes that blend traditional and modern art methods. Ivan David Ng explores identity and belonging by delving into his Hakka heritage, using the sky as a metaphor for shared human experiences. His paintings, layered with collage and paint, connect personal and collective history, memory, and universal themes.
