Press release
Another Gallery is pleased to announce Attention Grabbing, a solo exhibition of paintings by Ming Ying located at 52 Henry St, Manhattan, New York.
For contemporary painter Ming Ying, the history, imagery, and function of the court painter provides a visual language for her exploration of alienation in the West. Raucous parties are told in a visceral stroke, pitched against vibrant colorfields. Details of clothing, from ruffled collars and cuffs and the pirouette-like piles of hair are contrasted by Ying’s signature: the expressionless, mute face.
Throughout these works, Ying imbues her subjects with anonymity and longing, facilitating a multidirectional exchange with her subject matter that takes the viewer from the center of the Western canon to the experience of the displacement. Ying produces an alternate way of seeing, simultaneously monochromatic, figurative and expressionist, historical and solipsistic. Ying’s touch, coupled with a vivid palette, exposes haunting presences in social life and details the emotional journeys of the faceless.
Ming Ying (b. 1995) is a Chinese painter based in London. This is her first solo exhibition with the Another gallery.
