Press release

We are pleased to present its inaugural solo exhibition of paintings by Yoora Lee, Anemone. Stems of flowers blend like fingertips, and fingertips curve like pedals. A figure hunches in a corner, harmonizing with the encroaching landscape. In Yoora Lee’s work, the boundaries of figurative and landscape painting are effortlessly traversed. A quiet vibrancy emanages whether the source of light is from a laptop, a candlestick, or the ripples of the sun reflected in the ocean.

In Lee’s paintings springtime is palpable, punctuated by the hushed transformations of plants and people, in bloom and falling in (and out) of love. Lee communicates gentle moments through her figures, stretched in the sun or crunched in the shade. Her palette carries across her work, uniting disparate subjects and pieces. Oil paint, as Lee treats it, has the softness of watercolor. Blues, faint green, and a range of pink and purple absorb and reflect light. Works come into existence simultaneously—mosaics of muted tones and subtly rendered scenes. Lee’s naturelesque environment crosses into the abstract and back again, documenting a sensuous world where all things are connected.

Yoora Lee (b. 1990, South Korea) holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been featured in a solo exhibition at Painterspaintingpaintings in London, and at Jude Gallery in Chicago. Lee will be featured in a forthcoming solo exhibition at T293 in Rome.
